This industry consultation follows the Call For Evidence survey commissioned by the Marketing Integrity Group (MIG) in 2019 on the use of construction product information. The MIG was set up to tackle shortcomings in ‘Product Information’ identified in Chapter 7 of the ‘Building A Safer Future’ report, published by Dame Judith Hackitt in 2018.

It was clear from the findings of the 2019 survey that the quality of product information can vary considerably between manufacturers.

83% of respondents were in agreement that an industry Code of Conduct for construction product information should be introduced.

The MIG has listened to the industry’s views and recommendations. The findings from over 500 respondents to the Call For Evidence survey, together with two years of work amongst a broad range of industry professionals, led to the creation of the Code for Construction Product Information. The Code is made up of 11 Clauses, which strive for product information to be:

  • Clear
  • Accurate
  • Up-to-date
  • Accessible
  • Unambiguous

These five points are the acid tests that stand behind the proposed new Code. Plans are to launch the Code later this year.

The Code, detailed in the consultation report, is presented in an easy-to-read, digestible format. The aim is to gather views on the 11 Clauses, the implementation of the Code, and the ongoing management and policing of it once launched.

The consultation is being carried out independently, using the services of industry specialists, MRA Research. MRA Research, part of MRA Group, is one of the UK’s longest standing research and insight agencies specialising in construction, building materials and home improvement markets.
